1-10-15 – THAT THEY MAY LEARN NOT TO BLASPHEME #6 “Of whom is Hymenaeus and Alexander; whom I have delivered unto Satan, THAT THEY MAY LEARN NOT TO BLASPHEME.” 1 Timothy 1:20 Let’s return to Hymenaeus and Alexander for a few minutes, since they are the ones who brought this subject up. They apparently had a problem with blasphemy. Alexander is only mentioned this once, although. Paul brings them up as examples for us in verses 18-19, “This charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy, according to the prophecies which went before on thee, that thou by them mightest war a good warfare; Holding faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck …” Let’s work the reference backward – they were delivered to Satan because they blasphemed, i.e. that practiced blasphemy as their habit of life. “To blaspheme” is in the present tense which describes that type of action. The time of the action is mostly irrelevant in Greek tenses. They had made a shipwreck of their faith. We’ll come back to this, but for now we will continue. They had failed to hold their faith and conscience in safety. And so, they were incapable of conducting the spiritual warfare successfully. Our lesson here is to check out our own spiritual condition. I think the first thing to ask is how am I holding up on the spiritual warfare front??? I want to make a strong recommendation that you contact Lee Thomas at Praying Effectively For The Lost here on Facebook or at his website at pelministries.org/. He has a new book called “Living The Exceedingly Victorious Life” which will simply blow you away!!! I plan to discuss it in more detail at a later time.
