1.2 Million needed to fund ebola awareness and prevention in Liberia. Once again, we have to turn to the international community. The sad case of the neglect of preventive medicine in a recovering developing nation. We thank God for outside help but if Liberia will get there, it will take d collective effort of each n every Liberian utilizing what God has gifted him/her with for the betterment of society. The story is told in Nehemiah 1 of how Jerusalem was in ruin pretty much d way Liberia was in 2003. In Chapter 2, upon Nehemiahs request (national initiative), d Persian King (international community, United Nations, friendly nations, etc.) was generous in paving d way for nation-building (massive influx of millions in donor assistance) but in Chapters 3,4,5 & 6, we see that the Jews themselves got their hands dirty with the actual CONSTRUCTION work. Amidst much opposition, we see each person keeping their eyes on the ball. A wall that took almost a century when it was first built, according to Nehemiah 6:15 was finished in just 52 days. Under 2 months. In a time without AutoCAD. A time without electricity. A time before the discovery of mobile phones to call contractors n loudspeakers to coordinate the work. In a time without microwave ovens to heat food after a hard days work or gas stove to heat some much needed soothing hot bath water. A time without GPS, caterpillar machines and automated equipment. 52 days. Thats less than the number of days it takes to harvest cassava in most parts of Africa. Y n how was this possible? The answer is so simple it may confound the most complex of solution-seeking minds: Everyone manned their post. Everyone did their part. Everyone contributed. In a strongly male dominated environment, there was even a man who had no sons but who willingly allowed his daughters to play their part in helping to build a portion of the ruined the wall (Neh 3:12). Fellow Liberians, fellow Africans, its about time each of us dares to RISE to the occasion n play our part in lifting our respective nations n this remarkable continent out of the ashes n onto a platform of recognition n honor. 8s time to man YOUR wall... On this emerging ebola issue, I propose WE, market women, yana boys, young professionals, prominent citizens, pempem drivers, each contribute whatever we can towards a larger mobilization fund while we await external assistance. Too ambitious a plan? Obama won the 2008 elections in the United States on a campaign practically financed with $5 here and there from everyone including students and senior citizens. Big things happen from little efforts. Each drop of water adds to the mighty ocean. While I agree, there may be some sticky hands in this process, I am of the opinion that it is worth giving a try. A disease outbreak of any kind is a national issue. What are WE as Liberians giving to the process? How are we supporting the national awareness effort? This time around, the world is watching...
