1-20-15 – 0917 – THE LETTER TO THE GALATIANS, #59 “Even as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.”- Galatians 3:6 “IT WAS ACCOUNTED” is right where the legalists, especially here in America, stumble. The American work ethic is strong here and we like it!!! Romans 4:4 is not much of a warning for Americans, “Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt.” And most think that they are due the reward, the wage!!! They have little to no problem with James 2:10, IF they have ever even known about it or understood the impact of it, “For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.” I won’t even guess how many times I’ve heard “I’m doing the best I can do. Even God can only expect my best!” WRONG!!! CONDEMNED BY HIS OWN WORDS!!! “IT WAS ACCOUNTED” – This memorializes Abraham’s day of salvation. Do not be surprised if God gives you many opportunities to recount the great truth of this verse to others including Jews who call Abraham their father but do not do what Abraham did. John 8:39 recounts Jesus’ own words, “They answered and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham’s children, ye would do the works of Abraham.” And just WHAT did Abraham do? He did the works of God according to John 6:29, “This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.” “By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed.” Hebrews 11:8 “OBEYED” here is a synonym for peitho in Galatians 3:1. It is hupakuo which means to hear under (as a subordinate), i.e. to listen attentively; by implication, to heed or conform to a command or authority. Does that sound familiar to you? It should.
