(Times photo: Anthony Wahl) Mark Nesbitt BRODHEAD - Its a shot Brodhead junior Ned Slocum and many high school basketball players have played out in their driveway. Slocum poked the ball away from Black Hawk senior Heath Butler. With the clock ticking, Slocum pushed the ball up the court and drained a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to give Brodhead a thrilling 62-59 overtime win over Black Hawk Monday in a non-conference game. When I got the ball I peaked up to the clock, Slocum said of his first ever game-winning shot. When I realized I only had two seconds, I put it up and I got lucky it went in. It gives us a spark. Its a great win for us. We were coming off a couple of tough losses. We really needed a pick-me-up game. Butler scored a game-high 25 points and had five steals. Slocum scored a team-high 21 points for the Cardinals, grabbed 10 rebounds and had four steals in the second half. With the win, Brodhead improves to 5-10, 2-7 Rock Valley South. We knew they (Black Hawk) wanted to get the ball to Heath, Slocum said. Hes a great basketball player. Josiah played good defense on him in the game and that really helped us out. Its really exciting to win. It will get our momentum going hopefully the rest of the season. The largest lead for either team came when Brodhead senior Griffin Day and Josiah DeLorme each converted conventional three-point plays at the start of overtime to give the Cardinals a 57-51 lead. Black Hawk (7-7, 5-2 Six Rivers East) wouldnt go away quietly. Black Hawk junior Jacob Quinb drilled a 3-pointer with 1 minute, 58 seconds left in the extra session to slice the Cardinals lead to 57-54. Black Hawk senior Shawn Woodruff scored on a layup with 1:23 to go to cut the Cardinals lead to 57-56. With the game tied at 59 and 12.7 seconds left, the Warriors looked to get the ball down low to Butler. In those late-game situations you try to simulate it in practice to set up a really good play, Black Hawk coach Charlie Anderson said. We kind of sped ourselves up a little bit. We passed it to Heath and he had to hurry. We wanted to pass it to him in rhythm. The Slocum kid made a great play and shot. Both teams had chances to win the game several times at the end of the fourth quarter. DeLorme hit a jumper with 2:53 left in regulation to give the Cardinals a 51-48 lead. Butler answered by knocking down a game-tying 3-pointer with 1:54 to go. Brodhead won despite committing 17 turnovers in the second half trying to attack the Warriors 1-3-1 halfcourt pressure defense. The Cardinals had three straight turnovers in a one-minute span late in the fourth quarter. The Warriors had four empty possessions after Butlers game-tying 3-pointer. After the Albany game, I got in the locker room and said We need to have other guys score to beat good teams, Anderson said. It was great to see Troy, Jacob and Shawn be aggressive, but we just had too many turnovers. That takes the pressure off Heath. We had two missed layups, a turnover after it was tied at 51. Woodruff added 13 points and Quinn and Troy Wellnitz each chipped in 10 points for the Warriors. Brodhead seniors Tjaden Sanders and DeLorme each added 12 points and Day chipped in seven points. Griffin and Josiah did a great job of getting to the rim, Brodhead coach Nick Jarvis said. They didnt settle for jump shots. When they get to the rim they do some pretty good things. Jarvis understands the Cardinals must improve on attacking a 1-3-1 pressure defense. At times some of our turnovers were self-inflicted, he said. There were other times that we were trying to make a pass to someone cutting. They put Heath out top on that 1-3-1 and hes really long. Brodhead will host Evansville Thursday. We have a tough schedule ahead, Jarvis said. We want to compete every night. You hope this is something that we can build on.
