$1.3 billion in additional aid to Israel, via Egypt I’m surprised to note that the New York Times editorial board didn’t mention he elephant in the room: the Israel lobby. America’s only interest in Egypt is the Egyptian-Israeli peace treaty, which has taken out the largest Arab military power from the Israeli-Arab power equation. Ever since Egyptian dictator Anwar Sadat (regarded as a hero by Americans and Israelis but a traitor by most Arabs) signed the 1978 Camp David Accords, the Israel lobby has been making sure the U.S. Congress routinely bribes the Egyptian military to stick with that treaty, eliminating the only credible Arab military deterrent to Israel’s military supremacy over the Arab world. Hence Congress has slavishly been giving successive Egyptian dictatorships - despite their brutal repression of the Egyptian public and now brazen defiance of the Obama administration – more than $1 billion military aid each year.
