1.7 million Edo voters registered, 906,024 get PVCs - REC The Independent National Electoral Commission on Wednesday announced that 1,791,433 eligible voters in Edo State would participate in next month’s general elections, having been certified registered by the commission. The Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mr. Mike Igini, made this known during a meeting with leaders and representatives of 16 political parties at the Ikpoba Hill office of the commission in Benin. Igini, who stated that no fewer than 1,535,084 Permanent Voters Cards had been sent to Edo, with 906,024 distributed so far, noted that the commission had proposed a three-day distribution of remaining PVCs across the 192 wards of the states, from January 17 to 19. The INEC commissioner, who demonstrated the use of card readers, assured voters that the devices would be used at the various polling units in the state. He also assured the people that the devices would help check cases of electoral malpractice. While stating that those who participated in the continuous voters registration exercise would be duly informed of the collection, he however, urged the political parties to help create awareness on proper electoral conduct during and after the polls. The REC added that no new voter registration would be conducted in the state, in line with Section 20 of Electoral Act. -[PUNCH]
