1/8/15 (Thurs) MUST WE ALWAYS FORGIVE? Jeremiah 31:33-34 I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more. Jeremiah 31:34 History is full of people who have refused to forgive. In our day theres a famous account of forgiveness failure in Simon Wiesenthals book The Sunflower. This book has been used in university classrooms around the world. In the first part of the book the author recounts an incident in his life in which a dying German soldier asked for forgiveness. Wiesenthal was a Jew, and since the soldier had killed many Jews, he wanted a Jew to absolve him. Wiesenthal refused to forgive. Wiesenthal wondered, though, if he had done the right thing. The rest of his book contains the responses of 51 leaders representing the worlds religions. Most of them say that when we consider the horror of the Holocaust, no Jew has to forgive a German , especially one who has killed Jews. What do you think? You may have seen the movie Schindlers List. You may have visited a Holocaust museum. Most people leave the movie or museum with an upset stomach because they cannot imagine the horrors done to the Jews. Do Jewish people ever have to forgive Germans for the Holocaust? The Sunflower invites all its readers to ask that question. We know that our sins are a holocaust stench in Gods sight; yet we are forgiven. What do you think? Are there any sins of others that we should not forgive? Prayer Father God, you have forgiven us even though our sins are more horrendous in your sight than the Holocaust is in ours. Help us to forgive others for Jesus sake. Amen. chinesetodays.org/?d=1/8/2015
