1 Always be positive and nothing will get you down. 2 Everyone - TopicsExpress

1 Always be positive and nothing will get you down. 2 Everyone wants to see you succeed. 3 Failure only happens when you dwell on the negative. I bet these sound like wonderful bits of advice... They are all wrong, logically, practically, and historically. 1 Being positive is a good thing, so long as the positivity is based on something accomplishable without assistance (or that assistance comes from something greater). Selfishness is very positive, if self is happy then self is positive... Right? Perhaps one thinks negatively and the positive occurs, might make you even happier? How many times has that happened to you? Think positive... Bollocks! Have a better quip for uplifting speech (or ascribe to a different worldview). 2 If everyone wants to see you succeed there would be no selfish people. Having faith in other peoples unselfishness is quite the folly on your part. It is not to say unselfishness does not exist, but to ascribe your happiness to the belief that most people you meet want you to succeed, is preposterous. They want to succeed themselves wether you do or not. Again, have a better quip for uplifting speech (or ascribe to a different worldview). 3 Failure only happens when you dwell on the negative. Say that to the folks on the Titanic. Unsinkable they said, too many lifeboats will clutter the deck. If they focused on the negative (not counting the other elements that led to the decision) failure to save those peoples lives would not have happened. One more observation on dwelling on the negative outcome... Why are there fire departments, police, emergency rooms, ambulances, the Coast Guard, lighthouses, brakes, airbags, seat-belts, etc? Non-sequiturs of so-called uplifting speech, that is what I call those first three quotes. Here is a real uplifting quote that fits in most any worldview... Shit can and often will go wrong so plan enough lifeboats, even the Titanic sank.
