1 August 2013 Minister must move to resolve Dublin Bus dispute – Ellis Sinn Fein transport spokesperson Dessie Ellis has called on Minister Leo Varadkar to hold emergency talks with Dublin Bus and its workers to resolve a dispute relating to cuts which have led to planned strike action this Sunday. Deputy Ellis continued; “This was to be a very busy weekend for Dublin Bus with services running to Oxegen festival including a return service on Sunday night as the festival closes. The Minister has a responsibility to do all in his power to avoid the traffic chaos which could be caused by a lack of this vital public transport service on this busy weekend. Dublin Bus workers do an excellent and difficult job and they not chose strike action lightly. They have legitimate grievances with the management and their plan to cut costs which will see many drivers wages cut significantly. These cuts to overtime rates and sick leave are being enforced because of the mismanagement of the company as a whole, the overpayment of executives some of whom have second jobs and the long running under funding of the service by the state. Dublin Bus has said they have no contingency plan for Sunday. What they need is a plan which restructures Dublin Bus to provide a top quality service while giving a good standard of living to its workers. This is possible but it requires the dedication of the government and sacrifice from top management.”
