1 Corinthians 1:17–18, For Christ did not send me to baptize, - TopicsExpress

1 Corinthians 1:17–18, For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of no effect. For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. The Greek word used here for message is the word that we use for logo. The logo that is the cross of Christ is foolishness to some and wisdom for others. It is foolishness to those who are perishing because they are looking for a way to explain and extend their present life. Greek philosophy failed to adequately explain life and was at a loss when it came to death. The philosopher, no matter how wise, would always one day die. If he could do nothing for his predicament how could he help anyone else who are in the process of perishing? The difference that we have over the Philosopher of their day (or any other day) is that instead of avoiding death: our Philosopher embraced death. They considered the cross foolishness because the message of the cross is salvation through a sacrificing of the Philosopher, but it is in the death of the Lord that victory is won as He overcame death and now we can as well. Where is the worldly wise today? They are still searching for the meaning of life. Where is the scribe (not the Jewish scribe but the scribe sent along with soldiers to record the spoil taken in battle)? He is still in the pursuit of fanatical bliss. Where is the disputer of this age? He is still arguing, politicking, and debating. We as Gods saved have life and we have it in abundance. 1 Corinthians 1:30–31, But of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God—and righteousness and sanctification and redemption— that, as it is written, “He who glories, let him glory in the LORD.”
