1 Corinthians 14:26-28 What should you do then, brothers and sisters? When you come together, each one has a song, has a lesson, has a revelation, has a tongue, has an interpretation. Let all these things be done for the strengthening of the church. If someone speaks in a tongue, it should be two, or at the most three, one after the other, and someone must interpret. But if there is no interpreter, he should be silent in the church. Let him speak to himself and to God. In 1st Cor. 14 Paul has been speaking about the gifts of prophecy and speaking in tongues. Offering the gifts of the spirit within the context of the church should always be done with 1 Cor. 14:40 in mind: “But everything should be done in a fitting and orderly way”. This is so because our God “is not a God of disorder but of peace – as in all the congregations of the Lord’s people.” (1 Cor. 14:33). Paul begins this chapter of scripture encouraging us to eagerly desire the gifts of the Spirit, and in the same sentence also commands us to follow the way of love. If we offer the gifts of the Spirit out of the appropriate context, we communicate that we are unwilling to follow the way of love. The bible includes instruction on this so that we may engage the Lord and His good gifts together to the benefit of all. Verse-A-Day
