1 He who is often reproved, yet stiffens his neck will suddenly be broken beyond healing. The Revised Standard Version. Oak Harbor, WA : Logos Research Systems, Inc., 1971, S. Pr 29:1 Whoever stubbornly refuses to accept criticism will suddenly be destroyed beyond recovery. Tyndale House Publishers: Holy Bible : New Living Translation. 2nd ed. Wheaton, Ill. : Tyndale House Publishers, 2004, S. Pr 29:1 Whoever is stubborn after being corrected many times will suddenly be hurt beyond cure. The Everyday Bible : New Century Version. Nashville, TN. : Thomas Nelson, Inc., 2005, S. Pr 29:1 He who is often rebuked, and hardens his neck, will suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy (NKJ). Its not easy being corrected, reproved, or rebuked, but yet the word says that the Lord corrects or chastens those He loves. We are reminded in Heb. 12:7-11, that when we endure chastening, God deals with us as sons. Every father chastens his son and we resect them for it, should we not give God the same courtesy. Our fathers did what was best in their eyes, but God does it for our own benefit. He wants us to partake of His holiness. I often say He loves us to much to leave us where we are. I also am convinced I must be one of His most loved children...lol. When we understand that He loves us, we understand He is for us. If we dont understand His love, we will harden ourselves to His discipline. To do so is to our own hurt and destruction. Stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry (1 Sam. 15:23). The Lord desires for us to listen and obey Him. Of course its painful and at times even brutal, but there is an afterward. The time and place where it yields fruit because weve finally been trained by His discipline. Jesus revealed to us in John 15 that He wanted us to bear fruit, more fruit, and much fruit (vv. 2, 5). We cant do it without pruning. Bearing fruit, the end result of discipline is how the Father is glorified (v. 8). Today, if we should hear His voice, let us not become stubborn or stiff necked but receptive and responsive. We can bend and be pliable, or we can resist, break, and be destroyed. The wise are those who will hear and be trained by discipline.
