1. How to negotiate for a higher salary during appraisal? Ans. I am not sure if companies encourage negotiation of salary during appraisals. Increments are generally based on a fixed grid and are linked to performance ratings and once the company decides what the overall increase will be, the individual increments get decided based on the grid. Now if employees started to negotiate it would throw the grid out of whack. However you can have a frank discussion with your manager and explain your salary concerns. 2. What are the questions one should ask in their appraisal meeting? Ans. It shows that you are want to learn and are willing to listen to your manager. That’s the most important trait we must demonstrate during the appraisal discussion. We must remember not to get defensive and be willing to listen. After you have spoken about your accomplishments you can ask your manager 1) What is your feedback about my strengths and development areas 2) What are those key things I could have handled differently 3) What’s my career plan for 2014 4) Are there any additional areas that I can handle 3. How to handle first appraisal of your career? Please share some guidelines. Ans. The first appraisal can be very nerve racking and the preparation for that starts when you take up your assignment. Fits of all you need to be calibrated with your manager on his expectations from you. Your deliverables should be clearly documented in a goal sheet. Unless you know what and how much you need to achieve you will be working in the dark and you don’t know whether you are doing well or not. Also, from time to time you can proactively fix discussions with your manager and check that you are on the right track, does he have any feedback for you and is there anything you should do differently. In fact not just your manager, use the opportunity to seek feedback from any senior in the team since it will give you different perspectives and then act on the feedback. If you do these diligently then your first appraisal will be a cake walk. 4. How to handle a post-appraisal discussion? What to say and what to not? Ans. In your post appraisal discussion you must come away with clear cut actions and next steps. Your appraisal discussion is not a one off discussion. For eg there could be actions around your development needs and interventions to address them. There could be actions around your soft skills such as communication, leadership etc, there could be actions around additional assignments, projects that you would take up as part of your role enhancement. All actions should be documented and timelines put in and then tracked frequently 5. How to respond to a bad performance appraisal review? Ans. First of all ask your manager to be specific and give examples on areas of development so that you are clear in your mind about what you should have done differently. Getting vague feedback like Improve communication skills will not help you since communication is a vast area. Once you are clear about the areas, be open to feedback, listen and understand it has impacted your work and rather than wiating for suggestion from your manager, you think of how you should handle it differently next year. Periodically give progress on your actions to your managers so that he is convinced that you are committed to improve Ms. Rekha Narendra, Vice President, Human Resources and Talent Development Kantars Global Delivery Centre, WPP group
