1) I havent seen the movie. I am not evaluating it on craft. I am judging this movie based on the fact that the real life Chris Kyle was a sociopath who thought killing was fun and that Iraqis were all savages that needed to be killed, and Im judging the filmmakers decision to romanticize and celebrate such a figure. And the fact that some people have taken this film as motivation to kill more Arabs, which shows it has the effect of a malicious propaganda piece (see tweet screengrabs below). 2) I would see this film happily to give a more nuanced view aside from the points above if it were a free screening (please feel free to shoot me an invite), but Im not interested in paying to see the celebration of a sociopath. 3) Chris Kyles attitudes and actions are not representative of citizens in the armed forces. Veterans and armed service men and women deserve respect for choosing to serve, and for putting their life on the line to defend this country. 4) One can make an argument that they are actually serving corporate interests, and the the interests of a few powerful elite, not the American people. But their intentions are with the American people, and they make tremendous sacrifices with those intentions. One cant expect those who want to serve to know everything about the power plays in Washington when they are consumed with defense training and execution. It is our job as citizens to help them fight for us, to wrestle power back from the corporate oligarchs that march them to their deaths out of greed and racist empire mongering, and radicalize some of them to hate with an us vs. them mentality.
