1 John 2:1-6 “My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world. And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments. Whoever says “I know him” but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him, but whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected. By this we may know that we are in him: whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.” Ever since we recognized the sin in our lives and took steps to remove it by becoming a Christian, our overall goal has been to avoid sin. In reality, that is the goal for every Christian everywhere. How well we do with that particular endeavor however, seems to depend on the day. Sometimes we are able to lay our heads on our pillows at night with the comforting realization that, as near as we can figure, we didnt do anything wrong today. All too often though, our heads hit the pillows and we are confronted with the fact that we failed miserably. The question we often ask ourselves then, is whether or not we are really saved. There have been many times when I have had to look back at my own actions and say, How could a Christian have done such a thing? It is a terrible things to think, but it does sometimes plague us. So how are we to live so that we can be assured of our salvation? The last line of this passage gives us our answer. Walk in the same way in which He walked. The He in question here is Jesus Christ Himself. As we all know, Christ is to be our example. We should strive to show Him living in us but we also know that we are incapable of living a sinlessly perfect life like He did, and I dont believe that John had any delusions that we could do that when he wrote this. We cannot follow in Christs foot steps exactly, but we can certainly walk in the same way that He did. By that I mean that we can live lives of self sacrifice. We can treat others as we would have them treat us. We can put the needs and desires of those around us ahead of our own and, most importantly, we can follow God with our whole heart. Even though we will sometimes stumble and fall into sin, our Father knows how hard we try and He will always be there to forgive us, pick us up and set us back on the path. ~Kevin Numbers 6:24-26 Romans 8:38-39.
