1 John 2:2-3 2 Also, he is the kapparah for our sins - and not only for ours, but also for those of the whole world. 3 The way we can be sure we know him is if we are obeying his commands. quote from article to meanings, they are not my words: 1/ kapparah comes to mean expiation; something that wipes out or erases guilt or sin. Yom Kippur is the day of kapparah. We are responsible to for doing teshuvah; making an account of our deeds, regretting our past sins and sincerely resolving to do better. Kapparah, however, is beyond our control. This is the grace through which God erases the memory and the consequences of sin in the merit of our teshuvah and observance of Yom Kippur. 2/ Teshuvah means Teshuva, returning to recognize the Way of Heaven within all occurrences, is the essence of Torah observance. 3/ Faith as a belief is one thing, however this is not the Way of Heaven. Faith is not what you believe, it is what you do. example of an insincere observance: During the time approaching the High Holy Days we make efforts to remind ourselves of G-d’s Presence. We act extra religiously, we become more pious. In essence, we are trying to show off to Heaven how good we are and how we deserve the Divine blessing. Yet, once the novelty of the High Holy Day period wears off, either before or soon after the holidays themselves, we usually revert back to our normal ways, feeling secure that we have again “pulled the wool” over the eyes of Heaven and convinced G-d to bless us because of our nominal show of artificial repentance, temporary remorse over our evil ways and our superficial commitment to be ever more religious and pious. Summary, Real Teshuvah lasts a lifetime. Do not consider yourself in your heart to be closer to G-d, more religious, or better than others. In the end, the one who believes this in their hearts is nothing other than a “holier-than-thou” hypocrite. All we ever see is what is on the outside. So simply, do not be a hypocrite.
