1 Kings 1:5-19 Meaningless Sacrifice THOUGHT FOR TODAY: He has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God? Micah 6:8 When our children were young, they played basketball. It wasn’t uncommon for excited players to make amazing shots, only to find they had run in the wrong direction and scored for the opposing team. A moment of celebration was immediately followed by humiliation and disappointment. Adonijah woke up one morning and decided he was going to make himself king. Bathsheba complained to King David, saying, “Adonijah has become king, and you, my lord the king, do not know about it (1 Kings 1:18 NIV). Adonijah gave up a great number of animals to promote himself. For a day there was grand celebration with those gathered around him, until Adonijah heard a great commotion and realized Solomon had been anointed king by David. Then he feared for his life. It’s ironic that efforts to promote oneself can result in profound humiliation and destruction. We should examine where we are putting our greatest resources. PRAYER: Almighty God, help me to only make sacrifices for endeavors that bring you glory. Amen.
