1 Kings 19 ‘The Still Small Voice Utterly discouraged, - TopicsExpress

1 Kings 19 ‘The Still Small Voice Utterly discouraged, Elijah fled to Mount Horeb, where he asked God to let him die (19:4). Elijah’s ministry had been a ministry of miracles, fire, and the sword. He had caused a severe drought, had been sustained by ravens and by a jar of flour and jug of oil that never ran out, had raised the dead, had called down fire from heaven, had slain the prophets of Baal with the sword, and had brought rain to the land. And God taught him a wonderful lesson: God was not in the wind, or in the earthquake, or in the fire, but in ‘a still small voice’ (vv.11-12 IJR:NIV, ’A gentle whisper’). It seems if God was telling Elijah that while force and spectacular demonstrations of power are sometimes necessary, God’s real work in the world is not accomplished by such methods. Many centuries later, Elijah appeared again, on the Mount of Transfiguration, talking with Christ and Moses about the work that now at last was being introduced into the world, namely, the transforming of human lives into the image of God by the gentle whisper of Christ speaking in the hearts of men.’ Halley’s Bible Handbook.
