1 Kings 4 “God gave Solomon wisdom, very great insight, and understanding as vast as the sand on the seashore. Solomon’s wisdom was greater than all the people of the East, greater than all the wisdom of Egypt. He was wiser than anyone – wiser than Ethan the Ezrahite, Calcol, and Darda, sons of Mahol. His reputation extended to all the surrounding nations. Solomon composed 3,000 proverbs, and his songs numbered 1,005. He described trees, from the cedar in Lebanon to the hyssop growing out of the wall. He also taught about animals, birds, reptiles, and fish. People came from everywhere, sent by every king on earth who had heard of his wisdom, to listen to Solomon’s wisdom.” 1 Kings 4:29-34 Today’s chapter is actually an extension of chapter 3, the both dealing with wisdom. Here we learn that Godly wisdom is not confined to theology or morality. Rather, the reach of Godly wisdom extends to all matters of life. There is a sense, in which knowledge puffs-up with pride, which eventually leads to spiritual decline. But the label of “sinful pride” cannot be affixed to all people who are wise or smart. Lest we fall into “king worship”, the writer 1 Kings insists we understand that Solomon’s wisdom is only excellent because of it source. God Gave. God is the One worthy of worship, not Solomon. Solomon’s wisdom is on loan from God. “For God is working in you, enabling you both to will and act for His good purpose.” Philippians 2:13 Have you ever found yourself, as a believer, led to make a decision that made absolutely no Worldy sense...but was completely the right thing, Biblically? That’s God leading you in His wisdom, enabling you to choose wisely. Often times, the Lord allows us to see just how damaging the Worldly way would have been. Other times, we are only left with the peaceful confidence of knowing we are right with God. Now that we are sure of the source of Solomon’s wisdom, the writer goes on to insist that Solomon’s wisdom excelled in superiority. It is a fact that Solomon’s wisdom was superior to any other wisdom in the World. There is no pride in that. Glory to God! The sheer extent of Solomon’s wisdom, the range of is interests, is even more impressive than the quantity of his proverbs and songs. He speaks of the moral and the material and moves between “life & lyrics”. How liberating God’s wisdom can be…and this is exactly what confounds the World. Since God has left His fingerprints on all Creation, there is no place, where He does not furnish us with raw materials for Godly thinking. More amazing, is how the same wisdom is offered to us! “Seek you first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added unto you.” Matthew 6:33 Just remember: More important than obtaining the wisdom of God, is our obligation to personally know the God of all wisdom, through His Son, Messiah Jesus.
