1 Minute Devotional (Tuesday Sept. 2, 2013) The devotional today is from Sunday Morning’s Message “Gossip, Rumor and Slander” From Proverbs 11:13. Text: A talebearer revealeth secrets: but he that is of a faithful spirit concealeth the matter. Proverbs 11:13 Whoever gossips gives away secrets, but whoever is trustworthy in spirit can keep a secret. Proverbs 11:13 (GW) It is so difficult to undo the damage caused by gossip, rumors and slander. They are so destructive the scripture warns against them many times. Controlling our tongue is also difficult. The Apostle James tells us how difficult it is (James 3:1-13). It doesn’t matter if the intent was idle talk or intentional, gossip, rumors and slander still cause damage and they have no place in the life of a believer. Gossip happens because we are curious. We like to hear the latest news, especially bad news. The means of gossip are many today. We have the traditional telephone and letters, but our modern technology like email, text messaging, Facebook, twitter and a host of others, has made it much easier and more prolific. Our desire to know, to be the center of attention and to elevate ourselves in the eyes of others while diminishing others is the fertile soil in which it is produced. Gossip is the seed of rumors and slander. Gossips are untrustworthy because they will betray your confidence (Proverbs 11:13; 20:19). According to Proverbs they will be the fuel for quarrels (Proverbs 26:20). The person who gossips will allow this sin into their lives and when it has a foothold it will be most difficult to remove. In the process this gossip will hinder their fellowship with God until they repent and cease from gossiping. Pastor Larry Please feel free to share and/or to respond! Bonus Material Proverbs 26:20 Without wood a fire goes out; without gossip a quarrel dies down. Proverbs 18:8 The words of a gossip are like choice morsels; they go down to a man’s inmost parts. Proverbs 16:28 A perverse man stirs up dissension, and a gossip separates close friends. Psalm 15:1-3 A psalm of David. LORD, who may dwell in your sanctuary? Who may live on your holy hill? 2He whose walk is blameless and who does what is righteous, who speaks the truth from his heart 3and has no slander on his tongue, who does his neighbor no wrong and casts no slur on his fellowman, Romans 1:28-30 Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done. 29They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, 30slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; R.G. LeTourneau, the owner of a large earth moving equipment company, often told this story: “We used to have a scraper known as the model “G”. Somebody asked one of our salesmen one day what the “G” stood for. The salesman was pretty quick on the trigger, and after thinking a few seconds, replied, “Well, I guess the “G” stands for gossip, because like gossip, this machine moves a lot of dirt, and moves it fast!”
