1. PROF. TAHIRS VERSION Two events were conducted by Minhajul Quran and in the presence of Professor Muhammad Tahir al- Qadri. The first is a Christmas celebration 19 in Pakistan in January 2006 and the second is an Interfaith gathering sponsored and conducted by the Minhaj organization in Wembley Arena in London. 20 In both the events Prof. Tahir invited non-Muslims to pray according to their own traditions. Thereafter in Q-A sessions, 21 Prof. Tahir justified his actions by citing hadlth and claimed that his actions are proven by the Sunnah. 22 Key points from the two clips 23 are summarised below: 1. Prof. Tahir mentions two Christian delegations that came to the Prophet i§>: The Najran 24 Delegation and the Habshah 25 Delegation. 2. Concerning the Najran Delegations, Prof. Tahir mentions two narrations: 25 a. Company of 14 delegates (clip one) b. Company of 60 delegates (clip two] 3. It is not clear from Prof. Tahirs speeches whether he considers these as separate delegations. 4. However, Prof. Tahirs description about the Najran delegation is the same in both cases. 5. In the first case (of 14 delegates,) Prof. Tahir mentions the period as the 2nd year after Hijrah and that it occurred between the battle of Badr and the battle of Uhud. 27 6. Concerning the Najran delegation (both cases) Prof. Tahir claims: a. The Prophet S allowed Christians to stay in the Masjid Nabawl. 28 b. The Christians asked whether they could worship according to their own religion. c. RasulAllah S said: Yes, you are allowed to worship according to your own religion in my mosque, al-Masjid-un-NabawI d. That Christians prayed in Masjid Nabawl by the permission of the Prophet .§>. 7. In the second case (of 60 delegates,) Prof. Tahir claims: a. The companions A asked the Prophet H where the delegation should stay. b. The Prophet % allowed 60 Christian leaders 29 to stay in the Masjid Nabawl. 19 This was reported by a number of newspapers in Pakistan on the 6 th of January 2006. Newspaper clippings are displayed on a Minhajul Quran site: mcdf.info/en.php?tid=3714 [Retrieved on 26 th December 2011]. 20 Held on the 24* of September 2011. 21 As seen in two video clips posted on Youtube; the second clip is certainly after the 24 th of September 2011 because the Wembley event is mentioned. Even though Tahirs explanations are also related to the Christmas speech of 2006, that speech itself is not discussed in this paper. 22 Meaning the practice and tradition of the Prophet ft. 23 Transcripts of both clips can be found in Appendix C and Appendix D. 24 Najran is a southern province of Saudi Arabia bordering Yemen. 25 Abyssinia or Ethiopia (although parts of todays Eritriea were also included in the ancient Ethiopian Empire). 26 Actually, they are both mentioned in the same narration as we shall see, in sha Allah. 27 The battle of Badr (al-Uzma) took place in Ramadan, 2 AH; and the battle of Uhud in Shawwal, 3 AH. 28 Masjid Nabawi, Masjid e Nabawl Masjidun Nabawl: The Prophets ft Mosque in Madlnah. 29 Thus it is said by Prof. Tahir; see Appendix D.
