1. Scientific notation is a way of writing numbers that are too big or too small to be conveniently written in decimal form. Scientific notation has a number of useful properties and is commonly used in calculators and by scientists, mathematicians and engineers. 2. Scientific Notation, Standard Form and Exponential Notation are used in different countries but all have the same meaning. Scientific is just the simplification of longer numbers and then putting how many places you moved the decimal as the power of 10. The exponent tells how many digits the decimal point needs to move from after the first (non-zero) digit of the mantissa to get back to where it was in the original number - if it is negative, it needs to move to the left, otherwise (if positive) it moves to the right. (If zero the decimal point does not need to move!)
