ITS GONE GLOBAL: Sam Meyiwa has defended his now infamous crowd wave at the funeral of his son Senzo at the weekend. The picture of Meyiwa snr stretching out of the passenger window of the hearse made headlines and spurred creative South Africans to mimic his pose, in bizarre and hilarious circumstances. Though some found the whole thing amusing, others were more critical of Meyiwa snr, calling his actions unAfrican, attention-seeking and not befitting a father in mourning. But he scoffed at the criticism yesterday, saying his actions had been misinterpreted. People can say and do whatever they want or like. What I was doing was showing my appreciation for the support shown by people to Senzo, said Meyiwa from his home in Umlazi, south of Durban. When The Times visited the Meyiwa home, we found the father revving the engine of one of Senzos cars - a red Golf 5 GTI, with the personalised numberplate Nzori GP. Nzori was Senzos nickname. Meyiwa did not want to discuss other matters relating to his late son. I have been advised by government officials not to speak to the media at the moment, he said. Senzos death is still fresh in my memory. I will speak when the time is right. He did not name the government officials. Meyiwa said he was surprised that the picture of him had gone viral and inspired the #NotSenzosDad hashtag on Instagram and other sites such as Facebook and Twitter. The picture was published on the front page of the Sunday Times at the weekend. Celebrities and other social media users joined the picture-mimicking craze. By yesterday afternoon, at least 2 930 pictures had been posted under the #NotSenzosDad hashtag. They showed a baby hanging out of a pram, four men hanging out of a taxi, and a man with outstretched arms sandwiched between the mattress and base of his bed. Rapper HHP and radio DJ Fistaz Mixwell were among those who jumped on the #NotSenzosDad bandwagon. The life of Orlando Pirates and Bafana captain Senzo was cut short at the age of 27 when he was killed during a suspected botched robbery at the home of his girlfriend, pop singer Kelly Khumalo, in Vosloorus, east of Johannesburg.
