The role of the artist, like that of the scholar, consists in penetrating truths as well known to him as to others but which will take on for him a new aspect and so enable him to master them in their deepest significance. a) Both the artist’s and the scholar’s roles are based on showing facts equally well known to them and also to others though these facts have a different aspect, which makes them unable to become thoroughly proficient in controlling them in their most profound meaning. b) While the scholar’s role depends on seeing through things, the artist’s role is based on concealing the truths that are well known to everybody but that also have a new feature enabling him to take them under control in their deepest meaning. c) The role of the scholar includes revealing far-reaching truths; likewise, the artist’s role includes penetration of truths well known to nobody but him, yet these truths bring with them an unexpected aspect which is bound to make him master of their deepest significance. d) Similar to the role of the scholar, the role of the artist is based on grasping truths which are well known to the same extent both to him and to others yet which will assume a new quality rendering it possible for him to acquire knowledge about them in their most profound meaning. e) The role of the artist, which resembles the role of the scientist, consists of discerning and unravelling widespread facts equally well known to him and others alike and yet these truths will sooner or later enable him to master the new aspects.
