1 Thessalonians 1 The church at Thessalonica was born out of Pauls second missionary journey. Its birth is recorded in Acts 17. It was predominately Gentile. The Jews actually ran Paul right out of town after a very short time. (They even went so far as to run Paul out of the next town he visited, Berea.) Thats kind of a rough atmosphere for a church to thrive in but the Church survived and grew and Paul wrote two of the epistles to them. For our gospel came not unto you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Ghost, and in much assurance; as ye know what manner of men we were among you for your sake. And ye became followers of us, and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Ghost: So that ye were ensamples to all that believe in Macedonia and Achaia. For from you sounded out the word of the Lord not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but also in every place your faith to God-ward is spread abroad; so that we need not to speak any thing. For they themselves shew of us what manner of entering in we had unto you, and how ye turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God; (1 Thessalonians 1:5-9 KJV) Im not sure how much time had passed exactly between the forming of the church and this letter, but these guys have been busy sharing the Gospel. When the left their idols and found the true God, their hearts were stirred by the Holy Spirit in such away that they couldnt help it and Thessalonica was a very busy city with lots of people to share it with. It was a major port for Macedonia and it was the intersection for two major Roman roads. The church had a great location for sharing the gospel and, from there, it travelled throughout Macedonia and Achaia. In other words, when they got saved, they got serious. They didnt keep it contained inside their own walls. We have to share the Gospel wherever we go.
