1 beer fest, 1 grass snake, 2 sockless feet, 8 hours of Tour de France on TV, 37 miles of cycling and temperatures of 84.9F – quite a day! I was riding through Rolleston Park when I spotted the green snake slinking off the hot road surface into the grass. It was so hot that for the first time I was cycling without socks in my retro-style black leather Exustar SPD shoes. I remembered to SPF 40 my ankles. The Rutland beer festival is held in the rural museum at Oakhan, with straw bales for seating in front of the old farm machinery displays. My friend Terry arrived on a two-hour pass! My sampling was also limited - by the need to cycle back home as Barbara was suffering from a summer bug (air-con infection in her recently acquired 10-year-old car?). Awaiting was Eurosport’s complete coverage of the TdF mountain stage. On the doorstep was the bag of eclectic Belgian & German bottles I’d selected at the beer fest, safely delivered by Terry. It was going to be a long evening!
