10/10/2014 “So Elijah went from there and found Elisha son of Shaphat. He was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen, and he himself was driving the twelfth pair. Elijah went up to him and threw his cloak around him. Elisha then left his oxen and ran after Elijah. ‘Let me kiss my father and mother goodbye,’ he said, ‘and then I will come with you.’ ‘Go back,’ Elijah replied. ‘What have I done to you?’ So Elisha left him and went back. He took his yoke of oxen and slaughtered them. He burned the plowing equipment to cook the meat and gave it to the people, and they ate. Then he set out to follow Elijah and became his servant.” 1 Kings 19:19-21 (NIV) The lives of Elijah and Elisha were a wonderful example of the relationship between a mentor and a mentee. After Elijah had a great victory on Mount Caramel, Jezebel threatened his life. Elijah became very discouraged and weary. He thought he was the only man truly trying to live for God. In the midst of his frustration and fear, God told him to go and anoint Elisha as a prophet in his room. Elisha would be his successor, someone into whom he would pour is wisdom and experiences; Elisha would be his mentee. Elisha would also “minister to” Elijah. God will place certain people in our lives, be it our spiritual leadership, our professional mentor, or someone else, who will pour into us and to whom we will minister also. Ask God to reveal to you whom those people are in your life today.
