10/12/14 Good morning Peeps!!! Its time for a hump day virtual cup of coffee with the Lt. !! over the last 24 hours: 1 - arrest for burglary 3rd 3 - reports of breaking and entering a vehicle (most of the property has been recovered, and arrests pending the on-going investigation) - area of Vaughn Dr. / Roundhill Rd. 1 - assist with officer involved shooting in Jacksonville. The shooting in Jacksonville: Here is the press release from Jacksonville PD: Around 10:30 PM on November 11, 2014, Officers were dispatched to the Coliseum Apartments on Nisbet Lake Rd. regarding car windows being shot by a w/m using a BB gun. Officers took the report from the victim. The offender had left the scene apparently prior to the Officers arrival. At approximately 11:20 PM Officers were called back to the apartments when the offender returned to the area. Officers arrived on the scene and after a search of the area the offender was located. He was approached by Officers and after a few words the offender brandished a knife and closed distance to the Officers. After being told to drop the knife several times and the offender still approaching the Officers one of the officers discharged his weapon in defense of himself and others. The w/m suspect died at the scene. JPD is being assisted by JSUPD, Weaver PD The JSU Center for Applied Forensics the Alabama Bureau of Investigations and the Calhoun County Coroners Office. The Alabama Bureau of Investigations will be in charge of the investigation from this point forward. Judging by the comments on Jacksonville PDs Facebook page, there are several folks out there that seem to have keyboard courage and are scrutinizing the incident, and primarily questioning the police officers actions. The derogatory comments are ranging from why did he have to shoot the man? why didnt he just use his taser instead? to he should have shot him in the leg or the hand he was holding the knife in!. Im going to chime in on this because these folks need to have a reality check in life. When someone decides to threaten the life of another person (including police officers) you/we have the right to protect yourself/ourselves. Its called self defense. Police do not want to take the life of another person and we are trained to protect ourselves and the lives of others. A taser is a less-lethal tool that can be used if circumstances warrant its use, however when someone threatens police or anyone else in our presence with a deadly weapon (a knife), we up our level of force. Its a decision that has to made quickly in these cases, and to ask police to shoot him in the hand or shoot to wound is simply you living in a fantasy land and an indicator that you watch too much television. In real life, making a shot like that is not a realistic scenario. In real life we shoot center mass to neutralize the threat. To say its just a knife is an indicator of how much you dont know about that type of weapon. Knives can go through most of our vests....we wear bullet proof vests, not knife proof vests. Do your homework before making yourself look like a buffoon on social media for crying out loud. We are saddened that someones life had to be taken. We fully support our brothers and sisters in blue at JPD that had to take that action last night. No one wins when these type incidents occur. Its a tragedy, and we hope that the folks with keyboard courage would think before they type a comment.....or at the very least do some research first. Use your head for something more than a hat-rack for once. carry on. Lt. Plitt aka - papa smurf it is sometimes wise to be quiet and make everyone think your an idiot, than to speak and remove all doubt.
