10/17/2014 WEB MEMO A volunteer writes: Sometimes the notes describing an owners decision to part with their pet are almost as heartbreaking as the sad, confused faces of the dogs themselves and in Bullwinkles case his daddy was so upset that he wasnt able to give us much information about their life together at all. Due to a serious family illness, taking care of beautiful Bulli (he did tell us his nickname!) was simply no longer possible and after seven years of love and loyalty, this sweet senior found himself all alone in the strange and frightening new world of the Care Center. No wonder then that when I initially approach his kennel, Bulli isnt so sure about this unfamiliar person standing in front of him and he remains very shy and aloof as I loop the leash over his neck and we slowly head for the yard. He shows no interest in my toys or treats and when another dog approaches the gate he ambles over but doesnt engage, turning away from his potential friend to stare longingly through the fence, perhaps missing his people and wondering what happened to the home he thought would always be there for him. Bullis a good walker, so calm and responsive that it feels like theres a wee pup at the end of my leash instead of an 81 pound hunk and though his former owner told us he can be quite protective if a stranger touches his people, I have no issues passing others on the street or stopping for a chat with a fellow volunteer on our return. Now that weve spent some quality time together Bulli starts to open up just a little bit and when I sit down beside him he accepts my soft petting and leans in close to ever so gently sniff my face in return. I truly believe that once hes settled in a new home, feeling safe and loved as before, Bulli will turn that adorable frown upside down and reveal the happy dog within. But theres only one way to make that happen...ask to meet Bullwinkle today.
