10.18.14 Morning Musings Don’t just do something, sit there! A very difficult concept for most anyone—but especially those stuck in the American concept of life—to grasp and understand is one of stillness, or doing nothing. One might ask,“ why would I seek to do nothing?” And to posit a question like this is understandable because much of our society and more developed parts of the world cannot conceive of a life of doing nothing, as it is seen as slothful and hurtful for your fellow man. But, the reality is that doing nothing, as we understand it in our society is just not acceptable. What I mean by the phrase “doing nothing” is, not being a workaholic, not seeking to be constantly entertained by television, radio, etc. or when not doing these two things, not shifting into obsessive exercise, so that you aren’t seen as lazy and unproductive. Why do we have such strong resistance to stillness or doing nothing? And when I say doing nothing what I am referring to is stilling the mind and stilling the body. Why do we have resistance? It seems to me that we have completely bought into Rene Descartes notion of “I think therefore I am.” We believe if we stop our minds, we become vulnerable and open to losing our identity. Additionally, if we are not earning, being seen in a public place’s and receiving approval of others, we lose our value and identity. We have become very skilled at masking our busy activities as necessary and noble tasks. In fact, society rewards and reinforces our busy lifestyles and tells us that if we are not busy, we have no perceived value in society. A value that is measured only by how much wealth, fame, and power one has amassed. You see, these are the benchmarks society uses to measure happiness, not joy! So he who dies with the most stuff, titles, and power, wins! And under this notion of life’s purpose, I can understand why many seek to never be still, or to simply do nothing. Let me ask a simple question that may shed light on both true stillness, and doing nothing, as well as the franticly paced life of those who are in pursuit of wealth, fame, and power as the answer a fulfilled life. Have you ever felt true joy in your life? Not excitement that you may get when riding a roller coaster, or from receiving a new sports car or some other type of gift. The joy I am referring to, is that deep sense of completeness and wholeness; that place that stirs within when you sense that the universe is perfect and nothing or no one can make it anything other than what it is…perfect! The feeling you get when you are cuddling with someone and you feel a sense of unconditional acceptance and love. This is joy, and it has nothing at all to do with possessions or status. It has only to do with the mind stopping and releasing into a place of stillness, and doing nothingness. Letting go of thinking and allowing that which is the true essence of who you are, to expand. When the being expands it connects to other sources of true life that are releasing their fears and ego as well. When true being connections are made, there is a gentle flow of rightness, warmth, wholeness, completeness which is in its simplest form, JOY. When joy flows in it’s as though you are connecting with a long lost loved one. You feel deep within a sense of oneness and completeness. It’s though your piece of puzzle clicks into and fits perfectly within the void (often called a weakness) within another puzzle piece creating a sense of completeness and joy. Joy only occurs when the fear-based ego is released, thinking ceases—even for a moment—and your true self expands and connects to another, which is, itself. The being rejoices as it feels at home once again; at peace, and more complete than ever before. The journey into a place of joy and peace can only begin through stillness and doing nothing. But what makes it so difficult is that we have given over our true power to the larger society, and we seek to become exactly what we are told to become or not become. It’s no wonder that so many live their lives in such fear and anxiety! If I were a fish and spent most of my life trying to climb a tree because I was told that I was only valuable if I climbed trees, I would miss the joy of being in the place I was meant to be…in the water. Don’t just do something, sit there! :-) Peace, Greg
