10/20/2014 “Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.” Matthew 16:24-25 Mentoring is the relationship where one is a wise and trusted counselor or teacher and the other is a student that is able to be taught. Throughout the Bible, mentorship happened all of the time - Jesus to the disciples, Eli to Samuel, Elijah to Elisha, and the list goes on. Because Jesus is to whom we are submitted, mentorship should be dependent upon submission to Christ. There should be mutual sharing, trust, and involvement as the relationship is developed over time. The mentor is to serve as a model and be an avid listener that provides insight. It goes without saying that if mentors expect others to follow their example, they must be wholeheartedly committed to following Christ. Any hint of hypocrisy—“do what I say, not what I do”—will be detrimental to both the mentor and his charge. There is a cost to sacrifice when it comes to discipleship as it is the students that receive the benefits as the teacher empties themselves.
