10:33 Jan 06 WA Severe Weather Warning: Heavy Rain. Kimberley, North Interior. Details: Early Warning Network: ewn.au WA Severe Weather Warning: Heavy Rain For people in the Kimberley and North Interior forecast districts Issued at 10:29 am WST on Tuesday 6 January 2015. For people in parts of WA northeast of a line from Bidyadanga to Giles. This includes people in, near or between the following towns: Broome, Derby, Kuri Bay, Kalumburu, Wyndham and Kununurra. Weather Situation A tropical low lies to the east of Derby and is producing widespread showers and thunderstorms throughout the Kimberley and over northeast parts of the North Interior. It will be monitored closely for the potential to move over open water and develop into a tropical cyclone. Whilst there is only a moderate risk of the system developing into a tropical cyclone, it will produce areas of heavy rainfall and gusty thunderstorms until Saturday. Showers and thunderstorms may produce HEAVY RAINFALL that could cause FLASH FLOODING in the Kimberley and northeast parts of the North Interior. Flood Advices have also been issued, please refer to bom.gov.au/wa/warnings/ for full details. Gusty thunderstorms may occur over far western parts of the Kimberley, including Broome. In the 24 hours to 9am Tuesday, the following rainfall totals have been recorded: Leopold Downs 73.4 millimetres, Mount House Airstrip 67.0 millimetres and Dales Yard 57.6 millimetres. The overall weather pattern is not unusual for this time of year, but heavy rainfall may occur in parts of the warning area and cause damage to property and make road conditions hazardous. The Department of Fire and Emergency Services advises that people should: If outside find safe shelter away from trees, power lines, storm water drains and streams. Close your curtains and blinds, and stay inside away from windows. Unplug electrical appliances and do not use land line telephones if there is lightning. If there is flooding, create your own sandbags by using pillow cases filled with sand and place them around doorways to protect your home. Do not drive into water of unknown depth and current. Slow down and turn your headlights on. Be alert and watch for hazards on the road such as fallen power lines and loose debris. If it is raining heavily and you can not see, pull over and park with your hazard lights on until the rain clears. If your home or property has significant damage, like a badly damaged roof or flooding, call the SES on 132 500.
