10-4-2013 The beast we are fighting Now that we have our Princess back, I thought maybe I should back up and explain to Gabi Nation exactly what it is we are fighting. Neuroblastoma, for all intents and purposes, is a cancer of the nerve cells, baby nerve cells called neuroblasts. When we are born, we are born with hundreds of them. These neuroblasts travel through our bodies as we grow looking for their final destination. When they land, they stop growing and mature into the nerve cells that we know to be in our bodies today. Well, sometimes these neuroblasts DON’T reach their final destination (roughly 700 confirmed cases a year in USA). Instead, they keep growing, never maturing, eventually creating a cancerous tumor. This tumor will continue to grow at a very rapid pace until it either invades the surrounding organs and lymph nodes (rendering them unable to function) or is stopped dead in its tracks with chemotherapy. Disclosure-I am not a doctor. I am a researcher and financier actually. Nothing I write here should be construed as medical advice or a debate on our healthcare system. This is simply an attempt to help friends save their baby girl’s life.
