10 Books that stayed with me. Finally, something I dont mind being nominated for. Thanks Alice. Dont think too much, just list 10 books that have stayed with you. They dont have to be the right books or great literature. Then dominate a few people to share their lists. I nominate: Jack, Jack, Cal, Hannah and Rebecca. Skellig by David Almond I guess one of the first magical realist novels I read. Ill never forget finding that dishevelled and grumpy figure curled up amongst the cobwebs in the old garage, hungry for Chinese food and brown ale. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee She wrote one novel, just dropped it down on us all like it was nothing, and backed off to some dark corner while the world suffered the fallout. Probably the first book that comes to mind every time, and the one that convinced me to be a writer. One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez Sumptuous, captivating, head spinning. Everyone has the same name, history repeats itself, nothing is out of the ordinary. Raining yellow flowers. The gypsies and their inventions. The plague of forgetfulness. A whirlwind. Its perfect. 1Q84 by Haruki Murakami Slow, absorbing, discordant. I read a few Murakami books before this one, but the ambitious, over-reaching discomfort of this book left me feeling goospimply. Its not perfect, and at the same time feels like thats how he wanted it. A big influence on my writing. The Wasp Factory by Ian Rankin Recommended by Alice, this was the first book I read on a bus. Whats not to love? Psychopathic children, animal cruelty, genital mutilation, and pollinators. I read it shortly before choosing my degree course and it got me exited to start studying English Lit at uni. It by Stephen King I avoided Stephen King for year for two reasons. 1. I thought he wrote books for movie fans - a story-teller, not a writer, I condescended. 2. His books are all huge! So I started with a few small ones, and pretty much read It overnight. Absolutely horrifying. Never been so scared in my life. Harry Potter by JK Rowling Because yes. I mean, no explanation needed. This was my childhood. I read The Philosophers Stone about seven times before I passed it round my whole family and family friends. The Wife of Baths Tale by Geoffrey Chaucer Ive probably forgotten what this was all about, but Ill never forget Jamie and I revising this on her bedroom floor with the Big Scroll. We have about 6 meters of illustrated revision notes. But we finally passed that exam! Rain by Don Paterson Beautiful collection of poetry. If I recommend a poetry collection to anyone, its this. I remember jumping with glee when it was posted through my door. The first poem is heartbreaking and strengthening at the same time. It just goes on like that, hurting you and fixing you up. Maus by Art Spiegelman A real-life story/graphic novel of the horrors of the holocaust told through avant guard illustration in which Nazis and Jews are represented as cats and mice. Brutal and upsetting, the weight of this slice of history only seems exacerbated by the dehumanisation of the characters.
