10 Memorable Games Against: St Johnstone 1. St Johnstone 3-4 Dundee United -1958/59 Only twice in their long history have Dundee United recovered from a three goal deficit to record a victory. The first occasion this occurred was a 9-6 win over Edinburgh City in 1934 and the second was a 4-3 win over St Johnstone at the old Muirton Park on September 6th 1958. With Saints leading 3-0 at half-time it would take a tremendous second half performance from United to swing the result back in their favour. Thanks to a never-say-die attitude - and a wee bit of luck - United scored four second half goals to steal the points. Jim Wallace scored in the 47th minute and straight from kick-off St Johnstone managed to score a bizarre own-goal. Dave Sturrock equalised in the 64th minute and five five minutes remaining a costly slip from a Saints defender gave Jim Wallace enough room to score the winning goals and his second of the game. A truly remarkable result from Uniteds past! 2. Dundee United 5-1 St Johnstone - 1965/66 Only a few weeks after the Dens Park Massacre of 65, United hit five again in a derby match, this time against St Johnstone. Goals from Finn Dossing (2), Frannie Munro (2) and Ian Mitchell secured a memorable 5-1 win over our Tayside rivals. 3. Dundee United 7-0 St Johnstone - 1983/84 The reigning Scottish Champions, Dundee United swept aside newly promoted St Johnstone with a devastating attacking performance at Tannadice. Uniteds skill and pace were too much for a clueless Saints defence and goals from Davie Dodds (2), Eamonn Bannon (2), Paul Hegarty, Richard Gough and Billy Kirkwood secured a comprehensive victory for Jim McLeans men. 4. St Johnstone 1-2 Dundee United - 1990/91 The 1991 Tayside Derby Scottish Cup Semi-Final would prove to be a memorable one. Sixteen and a half thousand supporters crammed into Dunfermlines East End Park to watch the Perth Saints take on the Tannadice Terrors. It was a tight match but it was United who secured their place in the final, John Clark opened the scoring but Saints equalised before half-time through Harry Curran. United gained the upper hand in the second half and it was a young Duncan Ferguson who grabbed the winning goal! 5. St Johnstone 1-4 Dundee United - 1992/93 Following a run of disappointing results against the Saints, United gained revenge with a terrific attacking performance in Perth. Goals from Jim McInally, Michael ONeill, Paddy Connolly and John ONeil secured Uniteds largest away win against St Johnstone in the Premier Division era. 6. St Johnstone 1-3 Dundee United - 1998/99 A dream debut for new signing Billy Dodds, scoring a hat-trick on his first outing in a Tangerine shirt. Having played for Dundee, St Johnstone and Aberdeen in the past, he had all the ingredients to be Uniteds worst enemy, but its safe to say his evil past was forgotten after his first United game! His first goal was a superb looping header from the edge of the box that looked almost impossible to score, the second came from the penalty spot. The third showed real composure as he lifted the ball over Saints keeper Alan Main before cooly finishing into an empty net. Not a bad way to announce your presence at a new club! 7. St Johnstone 2-3 Dundee United - 2000/01 Perhaps the most memorable Tayside Derby of all! United secured their top flight status with a second-half comeback in Perth. Everything went wrong for. United in the first half, David McClune scoring within five minutes thanks to a deflection and in the 27th minute things got worse as Charlie Miller missed a penalty for United. A certain Paul Hartley scored a second for St Johnstone shortly before half-time but he would soon be regretting receiving a booking for his celebration. Following the break Hartley saw a second yellow and a subsequent red for a two-footed lunge on Miller. Miller then made up for his penalty miss, pulling a goal back for United in the 65th minute. United squandered several chances as the tension and pressure mounted on the Terrors roared on by a massive travelling support. However the equaliser did come, Craig Easton powerfully heading home Millers cross to send the United supporters into raptures. If you thought those celebrations were excessive, think again, with two minutes left to play Derek Lilley scored the winner to spark chaotic scenes in Perth as Arabs flooded onto the pitch. Order was restored but when the final whistle went the Tangerine hordes swamped the pitch in celebration relieved that their Premier League status was secure for another season! 8. St Johnstone 2-3 Dundee United - 2009/10 The first league meeting between St Johnstone and Dundee United turned out to be a classic! A five goal thriller in Perth and it Craig Leveins rampant Terrors who took the three points home to Tannadice thanks to goals from Danny Cadamateri, Andy Webster and Damian Casalinuovo. A great result for large travelling support at sun-drenched McDiarmid Park! 9. St Johnstone 3-3 Dundee United - 2011/12 The game couldnt have got off to a better start for United, Barry Douglas firing United into a first minute lead at McDiarmid Park but questionable defending and some dubious refereeing decisions saw St Johnstone 3-1 up at the break. It took two late goals to rescue the points, some bloke called Gary Mackay-Steven popping up to score his first United goal following great up set-up play by Johnny Russell and new signing Gavin Gunning also grabbing his first goal for the club with a bullet header in the 83rd minute. Final score, 3-3 in Perth. 10. St Johnstone 1-5 Dundee United - 2011/12 This will forever be remembered for the infamous Gaz-getaway: Gary Mackay-Stevens outrageous piece of skill down at the byline to get him away from two Saints defenders. Let it also be remembered that United also smashed their Tayside rivals, albeit the first two goals were own goals. St Johnstone pulled one goal back to make it 2-1 but Johnny Russell, Jon Daly and Milos Lacny scored late on to take the result far beyond St Johnstone. An outstanding performance following on from the previous weeks defeat of Rangers in the Scottish Cup at Ibrox.
