10 RED FLAGS THAT A HEALTH (or any) ARTICLE IS BS (from a non-health professional but a moderately smart consumer) 10. Has a sensational title to grab you, such as 10 Warning Signs of Childhood Schizophrenia 9. Presents the critical information a fun-and-easy-to-navigate slide show, complete with adorable stock photos 8. Limits such a serious diagnosis to a round 10 signs--not 7, not 11, because 10 just sounds so much better! 7. Author has no listed credentials or link to a page where credentials can be confirmed 6. Upon researching the author, learning in the Google search that she holds many roles for healthcentral and is on the editorial board but the link mysteriously brings you to remedyhealthmedia with no information about the author 5. Upon researching the author further and finding her LinkedIn page, learning she ...has over two years of professional video production, staff management, sales, and research experience in the fields of politics, health, and fashion...has many passions including fashion, hiking, playing guitar and piano, fashion blogging, traveling, Paris, and indulging in bold Starbucks coffee...Specialties:creativity, public speaking, staff management, writing, editing, video pre-production, production, and post production editing... Still looking for the health or psychology thing... 4. The warning signs are so generic that they apply to every baby I have ever known, including my own--I would have been terrified if I read it when I was a new mom and had my first, but after my twins came, I would have thought, Eh, whatever. 3. No examples in the form of lists or anecdotes to help illustrate the broad warning signs 2. And heres the most important one...no research, case studies, citations, footnotes, bibliography, or literature to support the content. Biggest red flag. I am currently writing a dissertation and even with my 45+ years of life, 25+ years of higher education in the field, 20+ years of teaching, and 10+ years of parenthood, I am not permitted to make a claim in my dissertation without backing it up with a published citation. Students learn best when they are interested in what they are doing and I have to back that up with Dewey or Vygotsky. Yet Amanda Page, with 2+ years of digital media experience, publishes an article (from the top of her head?) that has links to share on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Stumbleupon (?), email, and printable version. To help you spread the knowledge and the fear. 1. I couldnt think of another one--didnt intentionally try to make my point about a round 10 but I guess it does.
