10 Things You May Not Know About Me (aka, “I Hope You’re Happy, Greg Morrison) 1. As a teen, I was the subject of an Arkansas Gazette (pre-Dem/Gaz) feature story focusing on my love of old movies and collecting movie memorabilia. Apparently, in 1982, people thought it odd that a 15-year-old could recite 1930/1940s era celebrity filmographies on command. 2. My late grandfather, Lewis Earl, was a Hollywood cameraman in the 1930s/1940s. 3. In 1987, I wrote a fan letter to my favorite singer, legendary pop vocalist Margaret Whiting. To my surprise, she wrote me back. . .and thus began an unlikely correspondence and eventual friendship that would last until her death in 2011. In 1990, Margaret was kind enough to invite me to New York City to finally meet her in person backstage following a concert she gave with Skitch Henderson and the New York Pops at Carnegie Hall. 4. I graduated - finally - from the University of Central Arkansas with a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communications. My major was in journalism, although I have never worked for a newspaper or magazine, but instead have spent my entire career in the field of public relations. My minor was in speech and theatre, and yes. . .I have acted, sung and directed since graduation. 5. While most people are aware of my affinity for classic films, which I loosely define as being mostly anything from 1930-1960, with preference given to all things Judy Garland, Gene Kelly and/or Cary Grant. . .my favorite movie of all-time was actually made in 1987. Any guesses? 6. My secret shame: I’m addicted to Hallmark Channel Christmas movies. Not addicted as in ,“I enjoy watching them during the holidays.” Addicted as in, I record them on the DVR and don’t erase them until they are released on DVD. Don’t judge me. 7. In the late 1990s, a dear friend named Troy worked as a waiter in a Hot Springs restaurant. One night, Troy happened to be serving actress, Swoozie Kurtz. These days, most people know Swoozie from her work on the sitcom “Mike & Molly,” but I have been a huge fan all the way back to the “Love, Sidney” days, and I especially loved her in the hit drama, “Sisters.” In town shooting a movie, Swoozie and several of the crew began frequenting my friend’s restaurant. One night my telephone rang, and it was Troy. He said, “Hey, Ron, I have someone here who wants to talk to you.” The next thing I knew, I heard a voice say, “Ron, this is Swoozie!” Although I had laryngitis at the time, I enjoyed a remarkable 15-minute conversation with a very lovely lady. Sadly, Troy is no longer with us, but every time I see Swoozie in a film or on TV, it always reminds me of him. 8. I have interviewed Judy Garland’s daughter, Lorna Luft. Unfortunately, however, the article I was contracted to write ended up never being published. 9. Although I live in Little Rock, I have maintained season tickets to a theatre company in Dallas for the better part of the last 10 years or so. Shout out - Uptown Players! 10. I am a hopeless romantic. . .who is romantically hopeless. Like this status, and I’ll give you a number of things for you to share about yourself.
