10 months ago UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz hit the lowest point in his career, being told by doctors his ACL surgery didn’t take and another operation would be required. UFC boss Dana White said plans have Cruz returning in the first half of next year. Cruz is taking it slowly, not committing to a return date. “The knee is on point,” said Cruz to MMA Mania. “I’m doing what’s really made a huge difference is the eight week increments that I’ve given myself, that way I’m not thinking too far ahead and I’m not thinking too short. It made it a lot easier because instead of looking far ahead where I’m supposed to be, I just look where I’m supposed to be every eight weeks. So, everything will piece together over time until I’m exactly where I should be.” Cruz hasn’t fought since he defeated Demetrious Johnson via decision in October 2011. The win made him 19-1 and it was his fourth title defense. Since Cruz has been out, Renan Barao has been serving as the interim champion. He’ll look for his second title defense opposite Eddie Wineland in the co-main event of UFC 165. It’s September 21 from the Air Canada Centre. There are no confirmed details regarding Cruz’s Octagon return.
