10 years ago today the world lost one of the greatest composers of all-time, Elmer Bernstein. He absolutely changed the course of American popular music, not only through film music but through his concert works as well. Watching the SONS OF KATIE ELDER from the balcony of the old 5th Avenue Movie Theater as a 10 year old boy, and hearing his amazing film score made me dream of being a composer as well. Many years later, we were blessed to have Elmer as a guest conductor of our Walnut High Orchestra. What was supposed to have been a once-in-a-lifetime experience became a yearly event for several years, which is yet another example of his warmth and generosity (he never charged us a dime)! Hes still one of my dearest heroes and mentors, and a dear, dear friend. We miss you Elmer but YOUR music remains a rich part of the soundtrack of our lives, to all of us and to the generations that follow!
