10 years ago today was the 6.0 Parkfield Earthquake in Central California. This was a long awaited quake that also demonstrated the difficulty of attempting to predict them. It occurred at the end of the central or creeping section of the San Andreas, one that doesnt have any known history of big earthquakes (6.7+). It constantly moves forward to relieve stress. Once in a while, though, moderate earthquakes on this part do happen. They had been every 22 years on average, the last ones in 1857, 1881, 1901, 1922, 1934, and 1966. Instruments of all kinds were installed in the tiny unincorporated community in the mid 80s, measuring well water, rates of creeping, rock resistance and everything in between. They expected the earthquake around 1988, but it took an extra 16 years to happen. And even then, there were no precursors found with any of the recordings from the site. The quake was felt as far as Sacramento and Los Angeles, but the strongest shaking was confined to the rural area near the epicenter, causing little damage.
