10 years ago yesterday I packed my bags and moved away. My sister Daiane Gartner and my best friend Beatriz Santa kept asking me if I was nervous and I kept shaking my head. I sat at the gate, clutching my boarding pass with my sweaty palms, my heart beating at a rate of 1260 beats per minute. I was excited, not nervous. Ten years ago today I arrived in USA. Sometimes it feels like it was just yesterday....I don’t regret making the move from Brazil to USA at all. At 21, I was young enough to be able to restart my life somewhere new and old enough to know that living in San Diego didn’t mean that I’d be at beach every day. I can’t lie and say that I don’t miss Brazil. My heart aches every time a picture of a friend or family gathering I’m not at. I console myself with, “it’s okay. You’ll be there soon enough.” I miss everything from the beach to the food to my loved ones. I get homesick once in a while, but I am lucky enough to be able to visit every year. Making this move opened many doors for me and allowed me to love more people. At times it has been difficult and I’ve felt like an outsider in both Brazil and USA, but it has definitely been an adventure and I’m glad I chose to go along for the ride. Cheers!!
