100 Smile Challenge: National Hammock Day: How Will You Relax Today? Posted on July 22, 2013 by Jodi Rosenberg July 22 is National Hammock Day. The hammock seems to be the icon of relaxation so Today’s Simple Smile Igniter is to take time to relax and watch the world go by. “During [these] periods of relaxation after concentrated intellectual activity, the intuitive mind seems to take over and can produce the sudden clarifying insights which give so much joy and delight.” Fritjof Capra, physicist Sometimes in our busy world we think of relaxation as the destination at the end of the day, a reward for a list of tasks completed, but today let’s choose to think of relaxation as the bridge between activities. Small breaks throughout the day refresh your mind. For those times when the answer you seek is close, but somehow just outside your mental grasp, a few minutes to relax and transition your mind can be exactly what it needs to gather all the pieces together and come up with your brilliant concept. Small breaks to get up, stretch, and move if you are at a desk most of the day will do wonders for your body… and if you can find a hammock or place to stretch out and take some deep breaths you will find a renewal that will sustain you for the rest of the day. Today allow yourself to take a few mini breaks. Here is a list of ideas, let these prime the pump of your own creativity: Instead of eating lunch at your desk ask a co-worker to join you for a 20 minute chat and chow away from your desks. This could be a great opportunity to bounce some work ideas off each other or simply catch up on a personal level. Create a transition time between work and home. Instead of jumping right into the laundry, the cooking of dinner, and disciplining the kids how about hammock or lawn chair time alone or with your family. Have a young reader in your family…teach them to read (or grant them practice time) while snuggled together in the hammock when weather permits. Create a break time with your co-workers, friends or neighbors. It is always nice to just take a break from the tasks at hand to refresh with a glass of cold water, a hot cup of tea, or other refreshing beverage and catch up with a friend. Make it a 2:00 play date at the park, 8:00 tea time before bed, or afternoon frozen yogurt break. Tired of talking over the fence to your neighbors. If you’re both taking a yard work day invite them over (dirt and all) for an iced tea break. Share gardening tips and ideas while creating a better sense of community and resting your body. What ideas do you have? Whatever you choose to do today to relax, choose at least 20 minutes of a well deserved break on this National Hammock Day. 100smilechallenge.wordpress/2013/07/22/100-smile-challenge-national-hammock-day/
