100 Years Ago - December 31, 1914: “Tangoes, fox trots or other modern terpsichorean extravagances have nothing on the gyrations of otherwise conservative citizens who have endeavored to simply walk the sidewalks of our city since the recent thaw, which made the thoroughfares rival fairyland ballrooms in the glare of their smooth surfaces. In many cases, the efforts to regain their balance on the slippery sidewalks were laughable while in other cases, their misfortunes were not so funny, as many sustained bad falls with bruises and sprains. A number of the more cautious citizens kept to the middle of the road to avoid the icy sidewalks. The police have been kept busy for some time past warning owners of tenements or property to keep their sidewalks in a condition that will make them safe for pedestrians. The law requires not only the walks be kept clean of snow but clean of ice as well with sand or some similar substance be placed on them. “An automobilist from New York State, whose name could not be learned, performed a highly dangerous stunt Monday night by driving over the Mohawk Trail with two other men in a car. It was a red machine and bore a New York license. The party passed right through the city so their identity could not by learned. From reports of their trip however, they may be deeply thankful that they are still alive. According to reports, they slued on the ice along the trail against stone walls, fences, etc. and several times narrowly escaped being overturned.” These pictures dont show ice, instead they show the aftermath of a big snow storm which occurred in 1888. Enjoy the last day of 1914! :-)
