100 Years Ago – October 30, 1914: The sign on Witt’s Ledge, - TopicsExpress

100 Years Ago – October 30, 1914: The sign on Witt’s Ledge, which has caused considerable indignation since it was placed there, will undoubtedly be removed in a short time as a direct result of a petition containing 1,000 names of residents of this city which was circulated by seven young girls and forwarded to the president of the Coca Cola Company at Atlanta, Georgia, two weeks ago. “Miss Mary Richmond, one of the girls, has received a reply to the petition in which it is agreed to remove the objectionable sign under certain conditions. What these conditions are, Miss Richmond would not state this afternoon, but she did intimate that they could be agreed to and went so far as to say that she has no doubt but that the sign will be removed. Miss Richmond was unwilling to give out the letter today stating that she thought the other girls who circulated the petition should be first informed of its contents. “The girls who circulated the petition, which appears to be bringing results, were Miss May Richmond, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C.Q. Richmond of Church Street, Miss Margaret Barber, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A.H. Barber of Cherry Street, Miss Mary Hillard, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John R. Hillard of Pleasant Street, Miss Dorothy Busfield, daughter of Rev. Dr. and Mrs. Busfield, Miss Ruth McMillin, daughter of Mrs. and Mrs. E. A. McMillin of Pleasant Street, Miss Mildred Hynes, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Hynes of Arnold Place, Miss Lucy Pollard, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Pollard of Cherry Street and Miss Anna Whitney, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C.E. Whitney of East Main Street.” I’ll keep a lookout for the conditions stated by the Coca Cola Company and post them at a future date. The following photos are of the headlines from the story and of Witt’s Ledge in the early 1900s. Note how little trees there were on top. I dont know who the gentleman is in the photo. Thanks for supporting this site and have a great day.
