100 Years Going Strong! The birthday cake featured Ma’a Nonu and the Blues, Bob Lindsay’s favourite Super 15 Rugby side. We gathered this morning at the Ranfurly War Veterans’ Home in Mount Roskill to celebrate with Bob and family, staff and residents the anniversary of his birth 100 years ago on 23 May 1914. Bob served in WWII in the African and Italian campaigns with the Second Division Signals Regiment of 2 New Zealand Expeditionary Force. He was captured by the Germans in the North African Desert but freed five hours later in a counter attack! He spent his 30th birthday working alongside the 28 Maori Battalion at the fall of Cassino. There’s a lot in Bob’s life to remember and to celebrate and he was doing it in style. As of this morning he wasn’t sure whether that will include the victory of the Blues over the Sharks at Eden Park tonight! Bob is an icon for all aspire to be 100 – he is mentally and physically fit and was as proud as punch to receive from me his birthday greeting from the Queen. May you have many more birthdays to celebrate, Bob.
