100 Years ago tonight the First World War started: Tonight ,100 years ago, at 11pm War was declared between Britain and her empire and Germany and Austria-Hungary. The First World War was to have a dramatic impact on this nation and this village. 100 years ago, on this night,18 men of this village were going about the normal chores of village life. The fields need tending, bread was being baked, home meals were being cooked. Within four years these 18 men were all dead, shot or blown up in France, Belgium. Turkey and Salonika or lying at the bottom of the Oceans. Tonight we ask you to remember OUR men and all who were to perish in that terrible war. For them on this night their destiny was still be shaped. Only we today have the benefit hindsight and history. Please, at 10pm turn off all but one light in your house. You might even want to light a candle. At 11pm extinguish all you lights for a few moments and remember their lives that were to be extinguished. Thank You
