Solar sails are currently being used in some of our newest probes out circling or earth and beyond. They collect the particles coming from our sun and convert it into energy as well as can be used much like sails on our tallest ships on earth to steer the star ship in a specific direction. This is the method that scientists think will take us to the next star system. Where solar energy is lacking a laser is believed can be used to supplement the suns energy. It is believed it would take 1000 years to get to the closest galaxy to ours. A generational ship would of course then be needed to survive such a long trip. In my view I think it is interesting to think that Columbus used sails to travel to "the new world" in what was thought to be a suicide mission. Now 100s of years later sails my take us again to a new world this time literally. BKF
