100 years ago today on 9 November 1914 the German light cruiser SMS Emden met its end in the Battle of Cocos (Keeling Islands). Out of a crew of 376, 133 died in the battle. Most of the survivors were taken prisoner and brought to Malta as POWs. They spent five years in captivity living alongside other POW’s and internees from Germany and the Central Powers. A landing party, led by Hellmuth von Mücke commandeered an old schooner and eventually returned to Germany. A film on the fate of the 50 German personnel from the shore party was partly Filmed in Malta. Titled Die Männer der Emden it was released internationally as 13,000 Kilometer Thanks to Stephen Petroni for bringing these connections with Malta to my attention.
