100 years ago today, the HMHS Rohilla, a naval hospital ship struck Whitby rocks. The ship carrying 229 people including five nurses, was travelling to Dunkirk to rescue wounded soldiers. High seas & storm force winds made reaching the boat which was only 600 metres from the shore very difficult. For three days brave lifeboat crews and selfless community of Whitby & surrounding villages battled extreme conditions to reach the boat. 84 people lost their lives that day but 145 were saved. Today, we remember & pay our sincerest tribute to everyone involved in this catastrophic event. #Rohilla
