104th Ave Update: Courtesy of the Kenosha News: City Taking Bids for Long-Awaited 104th Ave. Work The city will begin taking bids Friday for the renovation of 104th Avenue just south of 60th Street, meaning the repaving of the seriously deteriorated road will be completed this summer. Repaving 104th Avenue has been a point of consternation between Kenosha and Somers, as the street borders each municipality. While the two governments debate exactly how to fund the work, the city said it will go ahead and get the project started before construction season ends. Mayor Keith Bosman said the bidding process takes about a month for a contractor to be approved. He said work should start sometime in mid-August and take about three weeks to complete. Deal with Somers Earlier this summer, the City Council approved a cost-sharing plan between the city and Somers to fund repaving work on 104th Avenue, as well as 27th and 28th streets. The city originally had plans to repair the three streets with city and town money and a $385,000 state grant Somers was to be awarded. But the grant fell through, sending city officials back to the drawing board. Under the new proposal, Kenosha and Somers would each pay $384,000 toward the project. The city will conduct the work, with Somers reimbursing the city over a number of years. However, that plan has not been approved by Somers, which said it had concerns about splitting the cost straight down the middle. The Somers Town Board will again take up the proposal next week. 104th to come first Only 104th Avenue will be included in this current round of bids. Bosman said that street was picked because it was easily the most used and most beat up of the streets in questions. Still, repaving about 660 feet of 104th Avenue, between 60th and 63rd streets, will cost about $190,000. “That’s without installing new curbs and gutters,” he said. “You don’t get a lot of bang for your buck on roads projects.”
